THE TUTORIAL APPROACH

A good book.
A real conversation.

One-to-one online study, shaped around your reading, your writing, and the questions you bring.

1 / THE TUTORIAL APPROACH

Your ideas belong
in the conversation.

There is a particular joy in reading a good book—and having someone to think it through with.

Oxford-style tutorials put your reading and your questions at the centre. Each meeting begins with a paper you have prepared, followed by a one-to-one discussion with Jason about the text, your argument, and your writing.

  1. 1

Read with a question in mind.

Jason will provide a course pack with a detailed syllabus, reading lists, and essay prompts, plus detailed instructions and practical tips on essay writing and tutorials.

  2. 2

    Give your thoughts a shape.

Write a paper that develops your own answer and makes a case for it.

  3. 3

    Think it through, together.

Present your paper, discuss your ideas, and take the next step as a reader and writer.

THE RHYTHM OF A COURSE

Time to read.
Time to think.

Each tutorial lasts one hour and begins with a paper you have researched and written. Present it aloud, then discuss the ideas, the argument, and the writing with Jason. Apply that feedback to a new question in your next paper.

The meetings take place by video call, so you can participate from home. The tutorial is a personal conversation with your tutor.

A PACE THAT WORKS FOR YOU

Choose your rhythm.

1

Weekly

Full Oxford pace. A four-tutorial course takes about one month; eight tutorials take about two.

2

Fortnightly

Two weeks between meetings. More room to fit reading and writing around your other commitments.

3

Monthly

A month between meetings, for those who would benefit from a slower pace.

Courses begin monthly. Contact Jason to arrange a start date.

WHO CAN TAKE PART?

Bring your curiosity.

Jason has taught readers from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Turkey, China, South Korea, the Philippines, Finland, Sweden, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Bolivia, Brazil, Egypt, Italy, France, Germany, Poland, and beyond.

The tutorials welcome curious readers aged 16–99. You do not need to be enrolled at a university. Readers with many different backgrounds can benefit from the challenge of developing an argument and discussing it carefully.

The tutorials aim to strengthen your reading, research, writing, and confidence in conversation. They are independent, non-credit courses; any arrangement for university credit must be agreed with your own institution.
